Meet The Organization That Is Re-presenting Jesus Through Campaign Strategy

You may have seen a commercial on television recently that begins with images of suffering accompanied by a voiceover describing a man. The conclusion of the commercial features the name of Jesus and the sentence, “He gets us.”

Seeing this ad immediately filled me with elation as I’d never seen a commercial about Jesus played so casually on television. Similar to all TV-watchers, I’ve been conditioned to see ads only about consumerism, food, medicine or secularism; seeing promotional content about Jesus was a delightful surprise. The commercial was spear-headed He Gets Us, a campaign designed to create cultural change in the way people think about Jesus and his relevance in our lives. Their mission is to create opportunities for people across the U.S. to take a fresh look at the “real” Jesus and consider his radical teachings and claims documented in the Bible.

This ad campaign took over $100 million—donated by a small group of wealthy anonymous families—on the national launch, putting the ad in the same financial arena as big-name brands like Old Navy, TD Ameritrade, and Mercedes-Benz.
